ART, LOVE AND HUMOR
Rolando in concert
with "Viaggio dell'anima'
After his first song and with all his deepest and endless humanity, Rolando's introductory thoughts were : 'Art, love and humor, with them we can go further in these hard times'.
An evening that can't be put into words. Modest attempts are possible, but a vocabulary much richer than mine would be needed to describe the wonder Rolando performed.
He spoke about the very first opera ever (L'Orfeo by Monteverdi) in the early 17th century and the very first operetta in the same subject (Orpheus in the Underworld by Offenbach) in the middle of the 19th century.
The program was based principally around the works of Monteverdi, but Rolando also sang pieces of other composers of this era (Luigi Rossi, Domenico Obizzi).
Monteverdi was present with his fabulous, dazzling songs from 'Quarto scherzo ...', 'Scherzi musicali' and, as the most important, from 'L'Orfeo'.
I have listened to Rolando in this repertoire for a very long time, but every time I am completely mesmerized by how perfectly his voice and performance style fit this music and this musical era.
I loved every moment of Rolando's singing. But my extremely subjective selection and preferences, the musts, the highest priorities were 'Si dolce é ...', 'Udite, udite', 'Vi ricorda ...' and the two absolute favorites sung by the most beautiful of all voices : 'Rosa del Ciel' and 'Possente spirto'. Rolando's brilliant performance, his shining and luxurious voice brought, as always, exceptionally emotional moments.
His ornamentation, particularly in 'Possente spirto', was unique, astonishing.
A short 'essay' on Rolando's breathtaking, very intensive stage presence :
As for every "Viaggio dell'anima" concert, when no singing, Rolando is sitting on a chair in the middle of the stage.
In Linz, it was an extremely special experience to watch him 'comment' on every single musical and sung note with his incredibly varied and attractive movements and feelings. His eyes, his face, all his body followed the performance of the orchestra. Rolando was music and rhythm themselves.
KÖSZÖNÖM, ROLANDO!
