What to make of Hoffmann's pose and expression? Is he swooning from unrequited love? Is this the expression of a masochist who seems to bring all sorts of trouble upon himself, yet cannot help himself from doing so, and somehow enjoys his pain? Maybe he's begging for mercy from this representation of love that tilts her head and smiles coyly? Is he prostrate, acknowledging his slavery to an idea? Have his amorous adventures finally exhausted the sex machine? Or, well--this is Hoffmann--is he drunk or hung over with a splitting headache to show for it?
Somehow, I suspect it's all of the above and more, which will make this a Hoffmann for the ages.
