"As a singer, I have a huge responsibility on the day of the performance, before I rehearse for 4 or 5 or even 7 hours the whole day. As a director it's an intensive 6 - 7 - or 8 weeks. As a singer I rehearse here (in Vienna) from 10am to 1am,. and then I have three free hours and then some hours of rehearsal.
For a stage director, there are the questions with clothes, lighting..., then you return home and you make plans for the next day. and if necessary, a little bit you adapt things to the singers. For a stage director there are sometimes eight weeks of rehearsal with fourteen hours every day, this is very intense, and then comes the premiere, and just like in football, the coach just looks at his team in work

At the Vienna State Opera, Rolando sang 42 times, ten roles, four times each role. The interviewer asked, why so few times and if he is very expensive. After a laugh, Rolando detailed the reasons : date matching questions, other roles, learning new roles, new projects,...
He sings 60 times in a season , has many recitals, also his own projects with Xavier de Maistre. concerts, madrigals, baroque ensembles and normally 2 or 3 operatic roles, other productions, no more, and "I think this balance is good for me, I love being on stage, to tell a story,, it takes a lot of time to rehearse..."

About Pelléas : He has sung this role twice so far, in Berlin and Hamburg. Last year Rolando had a long tour of concerts with Kate Lindsey, mentioned Alain Altinoglu,.who is the absolute best for this repertoire
About the young generation : "with a fantastic invitation, I had two "The Magic Flute" in Vienna for children. This was performances for families, I love Papageno, this was in a baritone version, Mozart didn't compose legato for Papageno..."

About laughter : "Laughter is healthy, Mozart laughed a lot, I like to laugh, but there's not much to laugh in Pelléas"
"In a recital we have a small story with light, with pain, the relationship with the audience is very important."

"LASSEN WIR DIE MUSIK SPRACHEN" (LET THE MUSIC SPEAK) /Rolando/
Since the very first concert of his "Sofa-Konzert"-series, I never cease to admire Rolando for his amazingly fantastic choice of artists. His guests are young, but already with imposing professional knowledge and a great ability to share their mature art with their audience.
With his irresistible power of fascinating his public and delighting the event, Rolando greeted the audience. Creating a friendly atmosphere immediately, he introduced the artists in the frame of riveting, but only short conversations with them, because music played the main role :
- Tangara Duett (bassoon duo)
- Ortalis Quartet (double bass quartet)
- Beija-Flor String Quartet
All were wonderful. Despite their young age, they brought us great art, played with delicacy, intensive skill. and in a very good mood, with smiles at any moment. We could see their genuine love and joy in performing beautiful music.
*My favourite musical instrument being the bassoon, I was delighted to have two artists playing it. "La cucaracha" and "Cielito lindo" performed by bassoons were something very new and fresh.
Four double basses played "La ci darem la mano" with great finesse and subtlety, they deeply impressed me. It was a new experience, a novelty, an unusual version of this phenomenal music by Mozart.
I was completely bewitched by the heartwarming, astonishing playing of violinist Haruna Shinoyama, member of the Beija-Flor String Quartet. She completely became one with her instrument.
And finally, a few very personal words:
We also had Colombian artists on stage. Since my visit to Cartagena, Colombia, I always have a big pleasure to have the opportunity to meet people from this astonishing country which has the most birds.
With this colorful musical evening, Rolando offered us another magnificent experience.

RETOUR A " LA SOMNAMBULE" - BELLINI - METROPOLITAN OPERA NY - 18 10 25
RETRANSMISSION EN LIVE du 18 10 25 :
Grâce à la retransmission LIVE au cinéma de cette représentation, j'ai pu assister une nouvelle fois à cette magnifique"Somnambule"qui me permit une seconde découverte de cette mise en scène de Rolando : en effet, j'avais eu la chance d'être présente à la première parisienne au Théâtre des Champs Elysées le 15 juin 2021.
Bizarrement, elle m'a semblé encore plus aboutie, plus sensible aussi et cela est dû probablement à deux raisons : d'abord, la présence d'artistes différents et aussi la grandeur du plateau du MET qui met particulièrement en valeur l'action, la gestuelle des protagonistes, les lumières, le décors et la chorégraphie.
De plus, la retransmission en live sur grand écran, avec un son d'excellente qualité, ne perturbe en rien l'émotion des spectateurs extrêment attentifs et respectueux : ni téléphone, ni toux... pas un bruit durant tout le spectacle. On oublie totalement qu'on se trouve dans une salle de cinéma.
Je conseille donc vivement à ceux qui auront la chance de pouvoir y assister, même en différé , de ne pas la manquer car elle réunit des artistes exceptionnels avec, en tête, Nadine SIERRA qui interprète Amina , espiègle, mutine et émouvante, avec une grâce naturelle et une aisance sidérante dans tous les registres . Sa beauté incandescente a d'ailleurs définitivement conquis le public newyorkais qui lui a réservé un triomphe après chaque aria.
Son partenaire : Xabier ANDUAGA campe un Elvino introverti, en contraste (voulu) avec sa fiancée et son timbre lumineux et vaillant m'a réellement éblouie. Il surmonte les nombreuses difficultés du rôle et distille des demi-teintes d'une grande subtilité. Les deux voix s'accordent merveilleusement et sont un atout certain à la mise en scène de Rolando à la fois dynamique, sensible et inventive.
Cette représentation a été longuement ovationnée et le public présent dans la salle s'est joint à celui du MET, tant il était enchanté de sa soirée.

And now, the most hard and impossible "mission" : how to describe this absolute and perfect beauty of THE VOICE.
After 16 years of listening to it, and after hundreds and hundreds of chronicles about Rolando's appearances, I am unable to find the right words of praise. Brilliant? Excellent? Charming? All this, but also much much more ...
The intensity of Rolando's presence on stage is legendary, and this time it was even more impressive.
At this fabulous recital, every moment of which was a treasure, the absolute "primi inter pares" were for me : "Vaga luna", "Besos robados" and "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz".
"Yours is my whole heart" - as at every occasion, Rolando, with his uniquely, exceptionally heartwarming voice, gave his whole heart...With her extremely sensible playing, Carrie-Ann Matheson, this marvelous piano artist was, also this time, a great partner of Rolando.
A warmest adoration accompanied Rolando from his very first minute to the last one on stage. We had countless massive standing ovations!

Ce récital marquait le grand retour de Rolando à l'Opéra de Vienne .

Rolando e Carrie-Ann a Vienna
La sera del 14 ottobre Rolando, di ritorno dagli Stati Uniti e impegnato nelle prove di "Pelléas et Melisande", si è esibito in un concerto di pezzi vocali alla Staatsoper di Vienna, accompagnato questa volta dalla brava e simpatica pianista Carrie-Ann Matheson, che ben conosciamo.
Il programma è stato lo stesso degli ultimi concerti di Rolando, ovvero una carrellata di pezzi italiani (ormai molto cari al suo pubblico), con le arie antiche, Bellini e Verdi nella prima parte, e Tosti, Puccini e le "canzoni" del primo Novecento nella seconda. Sia nella prima che nella seconda parte, Rolando ha anche intrattenuto il pubblico con spiegazioni e commenti sul repertorio, e con la sua simpatia e la sua verve che riscuotono sempre grande approvazione dall'uditorio.
Carrie-Ann ha suonato con impegno, brio e passione, e Rolando ha cantato con la consueta intensità e grande capacità interpretativa i vari pezzi, da quelli più seri e drammatici a quelli più leggeri, amorosi e giocosi. Imperdibile la sua "Musica proibita", davvero appassionante.
Numerosissimi e generosissimi i bis, ben sei!!! Nell'ordine: Ideale di Tosti, La cancion del arbol del olvido, Besos robados, Despedida, Dein ist mein ganzes herz, Te quiero dijste, Pubblico in visibilio, ovazioni, perfino striscioni di bentornato... Rolando ha manifestato più volte tutto il suo amore per Vienna, per la Staatsoper e per il suo pubblico, pienamente e calorosamente ricambiato con grande partecipazione e grande affetto. Per entrambi gli interpreti un meritato successo!
