Hace mucho tiempo que Youtube no nos da sorpresas con grabaciones de Rolando Villazón, pero ayer se publicó un documento no fácilmente disponible e inédito en la red hasta el momento: La Bohème de NYCO (New York City Opera), de 2001. Ya era público un video de Che gelida manina, pero ahora podemos disfrutar de la ópera entera, gracias al usuario tenore23, con un jovencísimo y fascinante Rolando como Rodolfo.

Quasi non é cambiato; stessa mimica, stesso viso, stessi gesti da attore. tutto é rimasto il medesimo. Adorabile ! Solo il viso diventato più maturo !

Thank you Teresa - this is a very beautiful and touching "Bohème" (extending of course Rolando). Unfortunately by the young artists only Daza become a little known - world career has only made Rolando. Here you can see how difficult it is in this profession.

Thank you so much for directing our attention to this video - what a treasure! I have just finished watching it and have the usual "heart pain" that I always get at the end of a good Boheme! And this one is superb!
How delightful to be able to see this early recording of Rolando (and friends) in such a superb production. The whole cast is excellent, and the setting, on the eve of World War I, is very compelling.
I have Rolando's other two DVD Bohemes - the 2002 Bregenz (1960s setting) and the 2009 Film ... and it fascinates me to see how he plays Rodolfo differently in each one. In the 2001 NYCO we see a young man caught in the wonder of first love - note his starstruck reaction in Act 1 when Mimi responds "Io t'amo". This Rodolfo feels the world in black and white ... and the sorrow of loss is devastating. By contrast the Rodolfo of the 1960s is more self-centred, more cynical perhaps. His reaction to grief is to flee from it. And the Rodolfo of 2009 with Netrebko is a man who has seen more of life - cares for Mimi and nurtures her, but in the end there is a certain resignation in his grief. I love all three interpretations!
No one can ever accuse Rolando of "standing still" in his role portrayals!!
It was also lovely to listen to Beverley Sills with her interviews and insights backstage.
