PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE
And the fourth ... !!!
Based on the play by Maurice Maeterlinck, the opera has three extraordinary roles. For this series of four performances, Vienna State Opera offered the most luxurious cast possible : ROLANDO as Pelléas of all Pelléas, Kate Lindsey as Mélisande and Simon Keenlyside as Golaud. It is impossible to imagine a more perfect cast. An encounter of three immense artists who made these evenings the pinnacle of operatic performance.
For me, the fourth evening was the most powerful one, with all the benefits of a fully mature performance and the presence of extraordinary singers, orchestra and conductor at the absolute top of their artistry, at the highest point of their artistic mastery.
THE VOICE and the stage presence of Rolando brought the same magnificence. Rolando has all the inspiring qualities and an immense characterization power and ability to render and paint this personality.
His acting showed love and mildness, worry and fright, lack of strength and indecision ...
His notes were wonderful, filled with heart wrenching beauty, poignant poetry in every moment, creating an unbelievable impact and an unsurpassed atmosphere.
Kate Lindsey was the ideal Mélisande, she depicted a fragile, extremely vulnerable figure. Her Mélisande was fearful and weak, but her love for Pelléas showed an internal strength, determination and, even, the courage needed to look for her ring. A perfectly portrayed character. Her voice was exceptionally fine, with unearthly beautiful moments.
Golaud is a real monster, cruel to everyone, he is brutal, savage, keeping under control his whole family. Simon Keenlyside was excellent, he drawed this frightening creature with infinite intensity and force. The passion of his voice and portrayal engaged the audience.
An unusual, interesting use of the curtain : on this immense stage, a huge black panel functioning as a kind of curtain shrank into asymmetrically narrowing squares, the last one of these squares, on the left side of the stage, showing a tiny piece of the set, as if looking through a window.
The culmination of this fabulous series! With standing ovations!
