TLALOC AND ROLANDO IN WIESBADEN

After an afternoon where everyone was paying attention to Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain finally showed mercy and, except for a few drops at the beginning of the concert postponed by a half an hour, the public enjoyed Rolando's voice without rain.  

Instrumental pieces ("Carmen Suite No.1" in five movements and "Habanera", by Bizet) opened the program, all fitting the title of the concert, "A Spanish Night".

When Rolando appeared, an especially long, most affectionate and warm applause greeted him.

He started with one of his gorgeous arias : "Le Cid" by Massenet.

Once again the same difficulty : how to describe THE VOICE? Splendid, magnificent, superb, ...? All these but also something much more. The luminosity, which is unique to Rolando. 

The audience felt they were getting special moments, and the first enthusiastic "Bravo"-s arrived.

"Seguidilla" and the "Carmen Suite No.2", in six movements, followed.

Rolando returned to sing zarzuelas. Two fantastic songs, loved from the very first listen. "No puede ser" - Rolando's magical performance brought stormy applause and the loud and enthusiastic reaction of the audience, and "Callate, corazón", this heartbreaking song with heartfelt melody expressing love and sadness, sung in duo with French mezzo-soprano Gaëlle Arquez. 

After "The Three-Cornered Hat" Suite No.1 by de Falla, Rolando enchanted us with two extraordinary successes of his repertoire: "Ya mis horas felices" and "Amor vida de mi vida"! An exceptionally passionate and powerful singing! Both songs heard a long time ago!

And a greatest, very special gift : "Granada"... Profound emotional feelings to rehear it after the Red Noses concert in Vienna in 2014.  The expressive singing gave pure delight and a deep fascination! 

As an encore, "Impossible Dream" in a powerful, extremely ardent performance and a burning intensity.

The evening ended with the sparkling and vibrant instrumental work, "Danzón".

A grandiose, impressive concert with a marvelous mezzo-soprano, Gaëlle Arquez. Her sensitive voice is emotionally expressive, nuanced, conveying all kinds of emotions.  We had a fantastic conductor, Alondra de la Parra, full of energy, power, vitality, whose music I have already heard in Mozart's "T.H.A.M.O.S." in Salzburg, and an excellent orchestra, the "Fundación Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid" offering the intense taste of Spanish feelings.

Una meravigliosa "Notte classica spagnola" a Wiesbaden

La sera del 20 luglio il Kurkpark di Wiesbaden ha ospitato il bellissimo concerto all'aperto "Notte classica spagnola". Il concerto, previsto per le 19,30, ha corso il rischio di non potersi svolgere, a causa di un forte temporale con pioggia e vento scatenatosi intorno alle ore 18, Fortunatamente il temporale è cessato e ha permesso lo svolgimento del concerto, rimandato alle ore 20 con soppressione della pausa. In questa occasione Rolando era affiancato dal mezzosoprano Gaëlle Arquez e dalla Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid diretta dalla brava Alondra de la Parra.

 Il programma, molto ricco, prevedeva pezzi strumentali (tre suites dalla Carmen di Bizet e due suites da "Il cappello a tre punte" di De Falla), pezzi vocali solistici e pezzi a due. Il mezzosoprano ha cantato la Habanera e la Seguidilla dalla Carmen, e un'aria molto nota dalla "Maravilla" di Moreno Torroba. Rolando ha offerto suoi veri cavalli di battaglia, amatissimi dal suo pubblico: l'aria "O souverain, o juge o père" dal Cid di Massenet, e le arie di zarzuela "No puede ser", "Ya mis horas felices" e "Amor vida de mi vida". Insieme, i due cantanti hanno interpretato il bellissimo duo "Callate corazòn" dalla Luisa Fernanda e la celeberrima "Granada" di Agustin Lara.

 Come si può notare, l'intento del concerto non era quello di offrire solo musica di autori spagnoli, bensì di proporre brani di autori vari che avessero come tema la Spagna. Due i bis: "The impossible dream" (cantato a due) dal musical "Man of la Mancha" e il Danzón n.2 di Arturo Márquez interpretato dall'orchestra. Rolando ha sfoggiato un'ottima forma vocale, e la sua splendida voce si poteva udire nei dintorni del parco già durante le prove. Le sue interpretazioni sono state come di solito generose, appassionate, intense, piene di fuoco. Anche il mezzosoprano, pur se decisamente più statico e composto rispetto al resto degli interpreti, ha cantato con appropriatezza, bella voce ed ottima tecnica, ed ha riscosso il favore del pubblico quasi quanto Rolando. Alondra de la Parra. amatissima dall'uditorio, si è scatenata in una direzione entusiasta e "danzante", anch'essa molto e giustamente apprezzata, così come la performance dell'orchestra, esperta in questo tipo d repertorio. Si tratta infatti della stessa compagine orchestrale con cui Rolando ha registrato anni fa il suo disco di arie di zarzuela "Gitano" con la direzione di Placido Domingo.

 La serata, veramente originale e intensa, ha avuto un'ottima riuscita, con pieno successo di pubblico, ripetute standing ovations per tutti, e... un cielo senza più una goccia di pioggia!

   My second evening with ROLANDO 

at the SALINE EBENSEE

The second sold out concert

This time, my chronicle is about only Rolando. 

The same venue, the same program, the same passion : THE VOICE! 

The magic was working!

   

In his performance, Kurt Weil's music showed all its power. Each word, each thought had their special meaning and importance.

Without hearing Rolando's singing in "Dear father', it is in vain to say anything. No words, even the strongest superlatives cannot illustrate the emotions in Rolando's performance. At the end of the song, I would have asked "Da capo" and, once again, "Da capo"!

"The Impossible Dream" ... Impossible to describe its magnificence, and, also, its very special effect on the audience ...

To me, Rolando's voice reaches in this song one of its highest in every sense : beauty, intensity, ability to bring all feelings and deepest emotions. A dream!...

A gorgeous "What A Wonderful World" ended the concert as an encore.

My first evening with ROLANDO 

at the SALINE EBENSEE

A warm "déjà vu" feeling. The concert venue, this huge hall ("Salzlagerhalle") reminds me of other ones in Verbier in 2012 and in Passau in 2022 with their magnificent vocal moments with ROLANDO!     

The program was extremely varied, incorporating different styles, showing a large variety of musical and vocal pieces. 

The overture to Candide by Berstein was followed by the great dynamism of the Valkyries' Ride by Wagner. 

At every concert, I expect with immense impatience Rolando's very first notes. It is always a splendid feeling to hear him live

Rolando started by singing two songs. Kurt Weill : "Oh, Captain! My Captain!" and "Dirge for two Veterans" (a lament for the dead).  For me, Weil is a rather unknown world, I don't know his oeuvre. These two songs brought new "flavors" to Rolando's amazingly large and brightly colored repertoire.  And what a joy to discover the music of Weil with Rolando's voice.     

Two instrumental pieces followed : "Straussiana" by Korngold and "Finlandia" by Sibelius. "Padam, padam" sung originally by Edith Piaf was performed with great power by Daniela Dett.

The most fabulous moments of the evening : The magical VOICE sang "Impossible Dream" ... A song I've loved since I first heard it with Rolando's voice, in 2008, in a television show. The way he sings this melody is special, exceptional, gives me goosebumps, and brings all the fantastic emotions. It was my great dream to listen to it live with Rolando! And the dream came into a beautiful and unforgettable reality!

After Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain", we heard a passionate "No, je ne regrette rien!" by Daniela Dett.

Rolando sang "Dear Father" by Neil Diamond. His performance was touching, every note of his singing brough deeply moving moments.

The official part of the evening ended with "Bolero" by Ravel.

The Bruckner Orchester Linz and their conductor, Markus Poschner offered the public beautiful instrumental music. 

For the greatest pleasure of the grateful audience, as an encore Rolando and Daniela Dett performed a fantastic "What A Wonderful World"!   

As also the co-presenter of the program, Rolando introduced the pieces, offering interesting details about them. The audience loved his energetic presentation filled with humour.

Another sublime vocal experience!
