I loved to do the staging and I will do it again next year, for Elisir d'Amore, and I was really happy with the staging, with the type of work. I am even a bit happy about the critics, that was good, that was not so good, because it means that I have created something, the audience loved it, the singers were very happy. There’s also the difference to the critics I receive as an artist, as performer, I mean as a singer: I was sitting in the audience, so I had a more objective eye on everything what went well and all what didn’t went well. And so actually, I do not need this “this is fine, this is not fine”… then, of course, people can love it or they don’t, but that's another story.

http://www.roh.org.uk/uploadedFiles/Press_andPress_Releases/Press%20release%20-%20Royal%20Opera%20House%20takes%20on%20Olympic%20Spirit.pdf
A special Domingo Celebration with Plácido Domingo and some of his protégées, details to be announced in due course.

También he encontrado una referencia en The Telegraph:

Placido Domingo Special Performance, Thurs 25 July - To close this special Season, Placido Domingo hosts a unique performance in celebration of 20 years of Operalia, the competition he founded to discover and honour young singers. With him will be some of the singers whose careers have been launched by the competition.

http://www.rolandovillazon.com/schedule/upcoming?html=1&page=1

"Hoffmann," seen Friday night, played to sold-out houses on the strength of its cast. In the title role, tenor Rolando Villazón proved his comeback from a vocal crisis is for real...
In his most strenuous role since returning to the stage in 2010, Villazon found his lyric tenor stretched almost to the breaking point but never quite. Though youthful ardor is now beyond him, he filled out the melodic line with ample, healthy-sounding tone and took most of the high notes. He even swaggered through both verses of the high-flying drinking song in the Venice scene.

CRÓNICA DE INGRID A.

Les Contes d'Hoffmann - Munich 25 November 2011

Probably you all have read over and over again all stories about the previous Munich Hoffmann performances? Well, what news to add about the last one?

I thought, I write in English for those reading from abroad, hoping to add the one or other additional emotion on this wonderful Hoffmann series. 25 November 2011, another chilly but sunny Friday in Munich. Christmas decors all over, hundreds of tourists swap over the different Xmas-markets pread over the city, the scent of cinnamon, roasted chestnuts, toasted almonds and hot wine is in the air… mixed with a hint of fried matched potatoes, on o Munich’s numerous specialities.

It will be my third Hoffmann tonight, a surprise and last minute decision,  an expensive change of mind, given that I have to travel from Paris. Well, here I am, for the first time properly equipped with binoculars and a parkett seat, very far behind the stage, helas!

I have listened to the 31 October recordings over and over again while reading the libretto, that’s why I almost know the text by heart and will so be able to focus entirely on what happens on stage, I’m very happy to be here and… very nervous too!

The lights go down, the subscription audience is less attentive than the one of the previous shows, or is the cold weather the reason for more people suffering from a cold?

Curtain up, Rolando alias Hoffmann, sitting on his bed, tries to write (actually to draw), his look goes far from just dressing up a costume of ancient times, I wonder how much of it is make-up (actually I know it is almost zero) and how much is Rolando’s extraordinary ability of looking exactly like a man of the time the opera is set in.

With the same passion Hoffmann is trying to draw, he is drinking. Well measured the first glass: just as much liquid to empty the bottle of… grappa maybe? One bottle finished, take another one from the cupboard, allowing so the Muse to appear. Angela Brower’s look is sweet, with Villazón-eyebrows she could be Rolando’s sister or … alter ego. The Muse will distract Hoffmann from negative relationships and lead him to inspiration and creation. That’s her job for tonight; it seems a difficult task given Hoffmann’s attraction to alcohol. Angela is just one element of the cast of this wonderful production, so full with promising young talents, appetizing food for opera agents on the outlook for future stars.

Luther’s cellar is nicely staged. The three students Nathanael, Herman and Wilhelm, played by Irish Dean Power, American Andrew Owens and , Dutch Tim Kuypers, look handsome and their voices are very promising. The ballade of Kleinzach is, we all know this, one of Rolando’s masterpieces. I could watch and listen to it hundreds of times… I especially love the final tragic notes switching to the story’s moral: Life is short, you must sweeten it up … drink, sing and laugh to the adventure… let’s cry tomorrow! Woodwinds accompany this line… Rolando’s puts so much emphasis in the phrase… first tears appear in the eyes of those who love tragedy on stage (like me!). Villazón shades the role of the drunk as if he had experienced it himself: from slightly tipsy onwards... to… well, we’ll see.

2nd Act Olympia
Children decor and funny staging, the barbie-like Diana Damrau, all this fits perfectly to young Hoffmann in short trousers, naively feeling attraction, supported by his pink glasses that make the world shine and Olympia be alive. Diana loves her role and her doll is brilliantly performed catching the entire audience’s attention. Like a child falling in love of a toy, Hoffmann falls in love with Olympia, he’s completely lost. He will touch ground again only after Olympia’s destruction as consequence of a cheque fraud. I loved an automate… mamma mia…. Hoffmann seeks to forget again by drinking.

3rd Act Antonia
Long black hair, white dress and colourless face: this in Antonia, already suffering lying on the floor, left  part of the stage. Our three students watch her silently from three chairs… they follow Hoffmann’s Tales through the entire show the same way as we do: wide eyes and ears open! I love this act, the beautiful romantic aria at the beginning, the rapid, touching development of what happens to those who don’t want to listen to wise advice but follow their quest and… are trapped in a diabolic destiny. Several stage tricks such as a score on the piano that opens like a window through which Dr Miracle can reappear to menace and threaten poor Antonia and us as well. It’s fulfilled, Antonia is dead… Hoffmann’s desperate call „Antoniaaaa“ – a 100% focus on one tragic expression, that makes our blood freeze and our eyes fill with tears. It’s funny to see how quick time passes by when you are happy: Happy because we can participate to this opera and refill our batteries with Offenbach’s bewitching score.

We are already at Act 4. La Damrau is wearing a blood red long lace asymmetric dress, transparent from her hips to the bottom. A tattoo on her arm, read nails and a red ring on one finger underline her image of a men-devouring prostitute. Mamma Damrau looks sexy … that she is not skinny doesn’t weight at all. One soul is gone under the barcarole tunes… another soul is stolen… the giant bathroom mirror is maybe the most thrilling object of this production, because it also captures us sending flashes to the audience each time it turns around.

Rolando has to sing and to play cards and he hast to fight against a rival, a fight that will cause the accidental death of the rival and forcing Hoffmann to take shelter falling into Giulietta’s trap….another aria smoothly performed, creamy, touching… a true Villazón. We are in Offenbach’s heaven. The love scene is almost for adults only, to watch it like a voyeur with my brand-new binoculars is hot… Hoffmann devours Giulietta… I hardly can imagine how difficult this acting must be (and how much fun for both artists) .

Hoffmann wants to know: Oh God, which drunkenness embraces my soul? … and later on: Oh yes, tears today, but tomorrow heaven! Hoffmann is lost: he gives away his mirror image ... in exchange of a soulless metallic mask… but tragedy continues… Giulietta poisons herself unconsciously and sighs out her very soul … her game is over….the devil takes away another love from Hoffmann who risks to lose himself forever – rescue is provided by the Muse … while Hoffmann seeks still repair in the bottle… now tremendously drunk.

The students are back, and we are back too in Luther’s cellar. Hoffmann concludes the ballade of Kleinzach. He’s finished… it seems… basta … how can inspiration grow in this drunken wreck, not any longer able to keep up on the chair.. gone forever… lost for the world?! It is again sweet Muse that cheers our Hoffmann up… to transform tears into inspiration, to seek in his tragic tales the tissue for new poetry. Stella resigns, she gives up… no profane relation shall be enchained… Hoffmann is free… the artist shall not…. well, is not obliged to love… tears make you big…

The last words hang over the scene when the light goes off.
A second of tragic oppression takes us the breath.
Then overwhelming applause clashed and gives room to our enthusiasm.

What a show. 100% perfect. What a pity that it is over (for 2011 at least). I rush towards the stage to assist the over 30 minutes of ovation to the splendid cast, director and musicians. They give a proof of how creative artist can become in taking the love from the audience…. Legs are shown through the closed curtain, Stella’s fur stole is abandoned together with a shoe… kisses and hearts are thrown virtually up and down from the stage to the audience and vice-versa.

Sometimes it happens that I get a backstage admission, that’s fantastic. It allows me to say hello to Dean Powers, Tim Kuypers and Andrew Owens, and it allows me to make the acquaintance of French baritone Kristian Paul, who impressed as last-minute replacement for Antonia’s father Crespel and Luther and who deserves for sure our future attention.

Rolando arrives in company of his charming cousin from Mexico. I can share Rolando some of the moments of my recent trip to Mexico (I might resume this journey for Teresas’s blog soon) and can assist some minutes later to a spectacular and private moment in the life of a Villazón fan, just another proof of Rolando’s outstanding and embracing being. What a personality, what a unique man.

I look forward to new adventures with Rolando, Villazónistas , happily united, included!

3. Akt Antonia

Hoffmann will wissen: Oh Gott, umschlingt Trunkenheit nun meine Seele? ...

Incroyable!

JOE McELDERRY Y ROLANDO VILLAZÓN CANTAN "O HOLY NIGHT"

Joe McElderry y Rolando Villazón en Popstar to Operastar
